These awards are on top of Houseworks existing accomplishments, including a previous 'Master Retailer' award, given out in 2003. Houseworks began as a small operation, with a 60ft showroom just outside of Dublin. Established in 1983 by Mark and Rosie Shortt, it has since expanded considerably. In 1991, Houseworks moved to a 5,000 sq ft showroom. In the early 21st century, Houseworks expanded aggressively by opening two new stores: on in Cork, and the other in Belfast. The Belfast showroom is the award winner.

Houseworks is a family run affair, with Ollie and Catherine Shortt (son and daughter in law of the founders) running the Belfast location.

Making a Winner

What makes Houseworks so special is the structure and the setup of the business itself. The judges of the awards made enthusiastic comments about the manner in which Houseworks operates. "They know their customer," began the judges, "they give them what they want, and they have a defined business strategy that focuses on quality rather than growth for the sake of growth."

Like any business, attaining longevity is the result of a combination of elements: customer loyalty, aggressive marketing, and sustainable growth. Houseworks has managed to accomplish all three in under 30 years, highlighting their attention to detail and commitment to excellent service
