Coming Soon To a Bathroom Near You: More Efficient Water Consumption Ratings

The average amount of water consumed by residents in the UK has tripled in the last 15 years, rising to 150 litres per day

This is an alarming trend that has not been given the amount of attention that it probably should, and the general public has no idea that there are parts of the UK with less water than the deserts of Syria.

The Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) recognises this trend, and has made the first steps on the road to properly addressing it. The BMA has created a voluntary water consumption standard, whereby companies can submit their products to receive a low water consumption rating. This new standard is the first of its kind; there are no other water consumption ratings that are made by and for the bathroom industry.

In order to receive certification from the BMA, a company must submit a 'declaration of conformity', and the BMA will perform random testing from time to time in order to ensure that manufacturers are living up the expectations passed down by the name plate. The products are expected to meet minimum requirements for both flow rate and overall consumption.

This approach, though not necessarily an all encompassing solution, is the first step needed to address the growing water crisis. Reducing our current water consumption by 50& to 75 litres per person per day.
