You Want Large, Functional Kitchens

The US and European housing markets have seen unprecedented escalation in sales in the past few years because of lower interest rates and buyers’ interest in owning, rather than renting their homes. Home ownership has been seemingly perpetually on the rise, making the housing market one of the most competitive and lucrative in its field of industries. Because of this large economic boom in the housing industry, consumers have been able to become more finicky in what they want when buying a house and many of them are finding that home builders and remodelers are willing to give it to them. So what is it with kitchens?

Larger kitchens are in vogue lately for several reasons. The first is that people are entertaining at home more than in the past and the kitchen is now serving as a primary place for congregation. Even more than general living areas, large kitchens draw people together, especially if room permits. Large kitchen islands that allow for people to rest drinks and converse are generally the focus for gatherings and serve well as places to pour drinks and serve snacks.

Functionality in every day life is a huge appeal for large kitchens as well. Many people prefer that kitchen accesses to other rooms such as dining areas and living rooms be larger than a standard door, often with no wall retainer between the rooms at all. The reason behind this is because people prefer that their living spaces flow together; perhaps only with flooring differences being any real indicator of where one space stops and the other begins.

Storage is another concern for people looking for their new homes. Gone are the days of tiny kitchen pantries and cramped cabinets. People prefer that their food and dishes are not cramped together and that they don’t spend lots of time looking for lost utensils. In larger kitchens, there is ample storage so that every item has its own space and is easy to locate.

Finally, with the kitchen being one of the two rooms that can add real value onto a home (the bathroom being the other) many home owners are seeing a large kitchen renovation or upgrade as an investment rather than an expense. This is good news for not just kitchen manufacturers but also for kitchen designers who can use the current vogue for larger kitchens as their opportunity to create the ultimate living space.
