The Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) believes retailers could be failing to capitalise on possibly the most lucrative segment of the bathroom market - bathroom design for the over 50s.

More people than ever in the over 50's age group are taking early retirement and are looking forward to an active 'life after work'. This brings with it demand for new luxury items. To ensure independent living, bathrooms need to facilitate ease of use and consumers are demanding high quality products. This should not be seen as a special needs marketplace but an emerging market sector.

According to Social Trends, the 50+ age group accounts for 80 per cent of the UK's financial wealth with most owning their own homes and spending more per week than any other age group.

To help ensure retailers and installers provide the customer with the right product, the BMA have designed a 'Rate your bathroom fact sheet'. This will greatly help many over 50's consider how changing their bathroom can help better meet their changing needs. To make the most of relatively small British bathrooms, clever design and planning is required.

The over 50's generation do not want to compromise on design and have a higher disposable income to demand innovative products and services. This is a relatively untouched market sector providing retailers with the opportunity to tap into huge financial gains.
