Good Bedroom Design Tips

A person’s bedroom provides much more than a simple place to lay their head at night. When organising a bedroom, size restraints as well as space issues in the rest of the house may come into play. Though the bedroom’s primary purpose is for rest and a private area, many people incorporate other uses into their bedroom as well. Some are constructive and others are counter-intuitive. Here are five simple tips for a well-designed bedroom that will allow you to design around your needs, budget, and space constraints.

Bedroom Lighting

Lighting is an extremely important consideration when designing any part of the house, but is of considerable more importance when designing a bedroom. First and foremost, consider any outside streetlamps or security lights that may shine into the windows at night. These lights can be seen even through drawn blinds and curtains sometimes, which can greatly impede quality of sleep. If you do have an obtrusive outside light, consider moving it or at least angling it away from the bedroom window if at all possible. If you cannot control the light, you may want to consider planting a tall bush beside the bedroom window to help block the light or at least invest in more robust window coverings to help drown it out.

Bedroom Storage

Adequate storage is essential for keeping a tidy, uncluttered bedroom space. And a tidy, uncluttered bedroom space is imperative for peace of mind and tranquility. Keep storage under the bed to a bare minimum and totally eliminate it when possible. Keep drawers and spaces between furniture clear of obstructions. Believe it or not, unkept clutter adds considerably to the brain’s unconscious anxiety levels, which can manifest itself into undue stress during your waking hours.

Sometimes a lack of space in the rest of the house will tempt people to push their work desk into their bedroom. However appealing this may be, it is often an extremely bad idea. Like clutter, having work-related materials located in the bedroom will only add anxiety levels to the one place you are supposed to go to get adequate rest. If you can at all help it, keep your desk, computer, and anything else work related away from your bedroom. Some studies suggest that even having a TV in your bedroom is a bad idea!

Bedroom Furniture Location

Nobody likes to fumble in and out of bed, particularly in the middle of the night. If two people use your bedroom, it is never a good idea to have one side shoved against a wall if it is at all possible to avoid. Other furniture should be as sparse as the room will allow. Like clutter, having furniture in every possible corner of the room will disrupt the room’s flow and will only hinder your rest.
